Change a custom field's type when its values fit

You can now change a custom field’s type after creating it. Open Settings → Custom Fields, edit the field, and pick a new type.

The change goes through only when every value already stored in that field is valid for the new type. For example:

  • Text to URL works when every value is a full http:// or https:// link, and those links become clickable right away.
  • Text to Dropdown or Multi-Select works when every value is one of the choices you set.
  • Dropdown to Multi-Select, and any type back to Text, keep your values as they are.
  • Multi-Select to any other type works only after you clear the choices saved on its records, because a list of choices isn’t a single value.

If some values don’t fit, nothing changes. Instead you’ll see how many values don’t fit and a sample of the records and values involved, so you can fix or clear them and try again. A field with no values yet can change to any type.

Contract-type fields can also be changed to or from Currency here. The same rule applies to contract-type fields edited from the contract type’s settings, and when an integration changes a field’s type through the Partner API. A type you set yourself is no longer switched back by the Follow Up Boss sync.
